You need to take it within 3 or 5 days after sex, depending on the type of pill. The sooner you take an emergency pill, the more likely it is to work.
The emergency pill does not stop you getting or passing on sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Use a condom every time you have sex to help protect you and your partner against STIs, including HIV.
The emergency contraceptive pill may not be suitable for you if you need to take steroid medicines for asthma or if you are overweight.
A doctor, nurse or pharmacist can discuss with you whether the emergency contraceptive pill is suitable for you.

If you’re sick (vomit) within 2 hours after taking an emergency contraceptive pill, you may need to take another dose as soon as possible. Talk to a pharmacist to find out if you need another pill.
